| (03 Jun 2008) The Big Lead Interview - Permanent Link |
| Posted in Press |
| Interviewer: You’ve obviously dated some pretty well-known women, but what’s the reaction from friends and family when you bring home a former SI cover model? Who gets noticed more in public when you two are out together, and how do you handle all the attention she gets? Jerry O'Connell: When Rebecca met my parents, it changed my relationship with my Father. He could not stop staring at Rebecca. We have not spoken about it but I think my Father realized I was cooler than him. Now that we are married, guys tend to not hit on my wife, but when we were dating, it happened all the time. In Los Angeles, there is a hierarchy at events and parties and stuff that is pretty lame. I would find that the dudes who were higher on the totem pole would box me out for a shot at the title. What can you do? I would just let it go and see where the chips would fall. I love Rebecca and I have to assume the feelings are mutual. She married me so I am doing something right. The one adjustment I had to make in my married life was sports viewing. Good sporting events tend to happen on Saturdays and Sundays. We are home and off work. Those days are also when your wife most likely wants to do social things. Not being able to sit around and watch all the college games and then the NFL games has been an adjustment. I watch a lot of games on DVR and go to your site for the rest. Credit to rebecca-fanpage.com

| (23 May 2008) MTV Hits High Society For Fancy ‘Superheroes’ Fashion Exhibit - Permanent Link |
| Posted in Press |
| Article by Ashley Mastronardi I often associate the Metropolitan Museum of Art with Egyptian pyramids, campy Warhol portraits, and a great grilled chicken salad from the café near the Greek sculptures. But now superheroes are surprisingly getting recognition from the fine art world in “Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy” — the Met’s latest exhibit that explains how the looks of some of our favorite childhood heroes (Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, among others) have influenced real world avant-garde fashion, ready-to-wear pieces, and high-performance sportswear. As I navigated my way through groups of well-heeled fashionistas, comic book nerds, and a gaggle of NYC tourists in the exhibit this Saturday, I was pleasantly surprised to find everything from Superman’s classic, but somewhat risqué skintight “S” unitard — which I learned was inspired by costumes worn by circus acrobats in the 1920’s — to a beyond vulgar (but amazing) Thierry Mugler black vinyl body suit, mask, and cape, reminiscent of Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman costume in 1992’s “Batman Returns.” (Tons more plus pics after the jump!) What brings the superhero bodies and the fashionable bodies together, the exhibit’s mission statement explains, is that both celebrate metamorphosis and offer entrance into another world. Both give us the freedom to fantasize and escape from the daily grind. The exhibit flowed well as I strolled through a natural series of sections that featured some of my old favorites — Superman & Spider-Man (the Graphic Body), Wonder Woman and Captain America (The Patriotic Body), Catwoman (The Paradoxical Body), Batman and Iron Man (the Armored Body), and Mystique from X-Men (the Mutant Body). But for me, it was all about the ladies. Catwoman’s “Paradoxical Body” portion is a particularly badass look at the chauvinistic representation of the superheroine. Although these women are blessed with superhuman powers, many are trapped by being sexualized with larger than life physical characteristics and by sporting air tight fetish gear. John Galliano, Dolce & Gabbana, and Alexander McQueen, among others have taken a note from Catwoman and the idea of “liberated” sexuality and by embracing fetishized items such as catsuits, corsets, and whips, thereby helping them become mainstream and somewhat sanitized. At the “Patriotic Body,” Wonder Woman’s red, white, blue, and gold one piece, was featured alongside politicized & strikingly similar designs by John Galliano, Bernhard Wilhelm, and Jeremy Scott in a look at how superheroes appearances and modern fashion can offer political commentary. Finally, Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique “costume” from the X-Men movies (which literally consists of prosthetics and blue body paint) represented the “Mutant Body” — which, according to the exhibit, encompasses those superheroes that represent the agony, rather than the ecstasies, of the transformation. Fashion, the exhibit argues, also welcomes different and diverse characters, and often celebrates the painfully odd and out of place. Mutant-like designs by Alexander McQueen and Thierry Mugler were also on display. The exhibit obviously ended up in a gift shop where I got a great new coffee table book on the subject. The comparison between Superheroes and avant-garde fashion is something that I never would have really though of, but now that the Met has done it, it seems so obvious. Although it’s way overdue, the exhibit is definitely worth seeing.

| (16 May 2008) Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel Voted Buffest Couple - Permanent Link |
| Posted in Press |
| Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel just topped the list of Hollywood's Buffest Couples. We would put them on the top of 'Most Annoying Hollywood Couple' but to each his own. JT and Jess beat out Gisele Bundchen and her Quarterback lover Tom Brady, as well as Fergie and Josh Duhamel for the new In Touch magazine hotlist. Also making the top 10 are Jerry O' Connell and Rebecca Romijn, and Eva Longoria Parker and Tony Parker. hollyscoop.com

| (10 May 2008) Ugly Betty Moving to the Real New York - Permanent Link |
| Posted in Press |
| Ugly Betty Moving to the Real New York Kat Angus Published: Wednesday, May 07, 2008 Ugly Betty is full of lies. America Ferrera isn't actually ugly and Rebecca Romijn was never a dude. Starting with its third season, however, Ugly Betty will be reducing its secret shame by one as the hit ABC comedy moves from its fake New York set in Los Angeles to the actual New York City, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Yes, despite being set in New York City, the first two seasons of Ugly Betty have been filmed in Los Angeles, using New York-themed back lot sets to stand in for the real thing. Oddly enough, the Ugly Betty pilot was shot in New York City but once the show was picked up for a full season, filming in the Big Apple was deemed too expensive and Los Angeles was chosen instead. But since New York state has tripled its tax credit for film and television productions to 30 per cent - plus an additional five per cent for productions filmed in New York City - ABC studios have decided to pack Ugly Betty's bags and head back to its roots. The show's writers are expected to stay in Los Angeles and approximately 150 crew members will lose their jobs, though most of them will probably be absorbed by other ABC shows. Thank goodness for that - we wouldn't want According to Jim to be understaffed. dose.ca

| (10 May 2008) Lindsay Lohan to guest on 'Ugly Betty' - Permanent Link |
| Posted in Press |
| Lindsay Lohan to guest on 'Ugly Betty' Adding to today's "starlets 'n' sweeps" theme (see also this post on Britney Spears), ABC confirmed that Lindsay Lohan will appear in six episodes of "Ugly Betty." Lohan will first appear in the show's second-season finale May 22. She will then be back for five additional episodes next season. Lohan, who starred in the Tina Fey comedy “Mean Girls” in her pre-trainwreck life as a pretty good actress, will play a “mean girl” from Betty’s high school who reappears in the hapless magazine assistant’s life, according to ABC’s Monday release. According to another Monday missive from the network, supermodel Naomi Campbell will also appear in the season finale, playing herself. If I may briefly opine on “Ugly Betty,” here are two words: I’m tired. No knock on Christopher Gorham, who plays Betty’s boyfriend Henry, or Freddy Rodriguez, who plays another of her love interests, but I’m very tired of the Gio-Henry-Betty love triangle. Both men are appealing actors but I'm over this plot. Henry’s shrewish baby mama, Charlie, also keeps turning up like a bad penny, and I’ve grown bored with her too. I just wish they’d let Betty pick a boyfriend and let the love triangle go. All in all, my patience for “Ugly Betty’s” post-strike story lines is pretty low at the moment. I understand why the show’s writers might feel they had to carry over themes that had been developing during the first half of the season, but frankly, the Henry-Gio-Betty situation was starting to wear on my patience even before the strike, as were some other elements of the show. I quite like Judith Light as Daniel Meade’s mother, Claire, but her trial has become kind of tiresome. The low point of the season for me was the episode that revolved around Claire Meade’s bottle of poisoned perfume. It just felt like a soapy conceit that was dragged out to the point that it was no longer fun and ripe for “Ugly Betty’s” brand of ironic playfulness. Same goes for the story line involving Wilhemina’s wacky sister. “Ugly Betty” excels at sending up soap opera plots while fully engaging in their more melodramatic elements. It’s a hard balance to master and it’s even harder to mix in sufficient quantities of heart and depth. But lately “Ugly Betty’s” balance feels off, and some of the heart, energy and ironic glee appear to be missing. Though some of the plots feel like they’ve reached or exceeded their expiration dates, I still have hope. It’s quite possible for “Ugly Betty” to regain its footing next year (and I’m heartened to hear that Rebecca Romijn’s Alexis character will only be a occasional presence in Season 3 – I don’t think she was adding much to the show this season). "Ugly Betty" still has winning moments every week, and the cast is always worth watching. There’s nothing going on here that a good, old-fashioned makeover couldn’t cure -- as long as they don’t make Betty over into someone I don’t recognize. ABC’s Monday press releases on Lohan and the “Ugly Betty” finale follow. Two releases from ABC: LINDSAY LOHAN JOINING THE CAST FOR MULTI-EPISODE ARC OF ABC’S AWARD-WINNING SERIES “UGLY BETTY” Lindsay Lohan (“Mean Girls,” “Bobby”) will join the cast of ABC’s hit comedy “Ugly Betty,” appearing in the upcoming Season Finale and in five episodes next season. Viewers will first see Lohan’s character in the Season Finale episode airing THURSDAY, MAY 22 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET). She’ll play a mean girl from high school who suddenly resurfaces in Betty’s life. She’ll continue on the show when the series makes its third Season Premiere next fall. MODE TAKES ON ELLE AT THE SOFTBALL EVENT OF THE SEASON, AND BETTY IS FORCED TO MAKE A DECISION – HENRY OR GIO? -- ON THE SEASON FINALE OF ABC’S “UGLY BETTY” “Jump” – Just as Gio makes Betty an incredibly romantic offer, Henry pops back into her life with a proposal of his own. Meanwhile, Betty finds herself centerfield at the charity softball game of the year: Mode vs. ELLE Magazine. Can Wilhelmina strike out ELLE’s star player, supermodel Naomi Campbell? In other developments, an orphaned boy from France turns up at Mode with an amazing claim, and Hilda learns some shocking news about Coach Diaz, on the Season Finale of “Ugly Betty,” THURSDAY, MAY 22 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network. ELLE Magazine editors Joe Zee and Robbie Myers appear as themselves. “Ugly Betty” stars America Ferrera as Betty Suarez, Eric Mabius as Daniel Meade, Tony Plana as Ignacio, Ana Ortiz as Hilda, Ashley Jensen as Christina, Becki Newton as Amanda, Mark Indelicato as Justin, Michael Urie as Marc, Judith Light as Claire Meade, Christopher Gorham as Henry, Rebecca Romijn as Alexis and Vanessa Williams as Wilhelmina Slater. Freddy Rodriguez is a recurring guest star as Gio. Guest starring are Naomi Campbell as herself, Joe Zee as himself, Robbie Myers as herself, Eddie Cibrian as Coach Diaz, Alec Mapa as Suzuki St. Pierre, Julian de la Cell as Daniel Jr., Torill as Madelon de Bie and Lindsay Lohan as Kimberly. “Jump” was written by Silvio Horta and directed by Victor Nelli, Jr. featuresblogs.chicagotribune.com
